英语词语的转义（connotation）现象特别普遍，用法灵活，形象生动，含义丰富，因而经常给翻译者带来语义转换的困难和障碍，翻译者往往因思维定势（think potence）的影响，一般只能理解及翻译出其本意（denotation），而忽视了其转义。
Connotation：idea which a word makes one think of in addition to the main meaning隐含意义；言外之义。E.g. The word “‘hack’ means ‘journalist’ but has derogatory connotations. Hack一词意为‘新闻记者’，但含贬义。E.g. Hollywood holds connotations of romance and glittering success. 好莱坞一词包含了浪漫与耀眼的成就的含义。
