英语词语的转义(connotation)现象特别普遍,用法灵活,形象生动,含义丰富,因而经常给翻译者带来语义转换的困难和障碍,翻译者往往因思维定势(think potence)的影响,一般只能理解及翻译出其本意(denotation),而忽视了其转义。
Connotation:idea which a word makes one think of in addition to the main meaning隐含意义;言外之义。E.g. The word “‘hack’ means ‘journalist’ but has derogatory connotations. Hack一词意为‘新闻记者’,但含贬义。E.g. Hollywood holds connotations of romance and glittering success. 好莱坞一词包含了浪漫与耀眼的成就的含义。
