毛遂自荐：毛遂使战国时代赵国平原君的门客。秦兵攻打赵国，平原君奉命到楚国求救，毛遂自动请求跟着去。到了楚国，平原君跟楚王谈了一上午没有结果。毛遂挺身而出，陈述利害，楚王才答应派春申君带兵去救赵国。后来用“毛遂自荐”比喻自己推荐自己。

Mao Sui was a hanger-on of Marquis Pingyuan of Zhao during the Warring States Period.  When the state of Qin was attacking the state of Zhao, the marquis was dispatched as a convoy to the state of Chu to ask for help, and Mao Sui went on the mission on his own volition.  The negotiation between the marquis and the duke of Chu went on for an entire morning but fell through.  It was Mao Sui who stepped forward bravely, explained the seriousness of the situation to the duke, and talked him into dispatching Marquis Chunshen to the resuce of the state of Zhao.  From this proverb is derived the phrase '毛遂自荐', meaning 'volunteer to do something.' or 'recommend oneself for a position or task'.
