Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Qin Gang's Remarks on the Japanese Prime Minister's China-related Policy Speech at the Diet Session
Q: In his policy speech at the Diet session, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe accused China of unilaterally establishing the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) and repeatedly intruding into "Japan's territorial waters" off the Diaoyu Islands. He said that Japan "would never accept an attempt by force to change the status quo" and would handle "the situation calmly and decisively at the same time". Abe also claimed that his door of dialogue with China would remain open and that he would work to improve Japan-China relationship and refocus it on the development of "strategic relations of mutual benefit". What is China's comment?
A: The Japanese leader has once again made in public groundless accusations against China. We are strongly dissatisfied with that. I would like to reiterate the following points: First, China's establishment of the ADIZ is legitimate and Japan has no right to make irresponsible remarks. Second, it is Japan who changes the status quo of shelving differences on the issue of the Diaoyu Islands, stirs up trouble and infringes time and again China's territorial sovereignty. The Chinese side will continue to do what is necessary to resolutely safeguard its territorial sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands. Third, the Japanese leader, who makes no attempt to reflect on history of aggression but every attempt to set back the wheel of history, has shut with his actions the door on dialogue with China. We urge the Japanese leader to correct his attitude, stop provocations, own up to mistakes and change course.
