Precipitate

(v.)

1. cause (sth) to happen suddenly or soon(er); hasten

使(某事物)突然或迅速地发生;加速

e.g. events that precipitated his ruin

突然毁了他的事件

e.g. One small error precipitated the disaster.

一个小小的错误酿成这一灾难

2. (a)

throw (sb/sth)with force (as if) from a great height

(似)自极高处将(某人/某物)猛然扔下;猛摔(某人/某物)

(b) precipitate sb/sth into sth

(fig.) throw sb/sth suddenly (into a state or condition)

使某人/某事物突然陷入(某种状况)

e.g. The assasination of the ambassador precipitated the country into war.

由于大使遇刺,该国顿时进入了战争状态。

3. (chemistry)

(a) (of a substance) separate into solid form from the liquid in which it is held

(指物质)沉淀,淀析

(b) cause (a substance) to do this

使(物质)沉淀;析出(某种物质)

4. precipitate (sth) (as sth): (cause vapour to) condense and form rain, snow etc.

(使水气)冷凝成为雨、雪等

e.g. The clouds precipiate/are precipitated as snow in winter.

在冬天云冷凝成雪。
