Summon

(v.)

1. to order sb to appear in court

传唤,传讯(出庭)

(syn.) summons

e.g. He was summoned to appear before the magistrates.

他被传唤在地方法院出庭。

e.g. summon sb (to sth): to order sb to come to you

召唤

e.g. In May 1688 he was urgently summoned to London.

1688年5月,他被紧急召往伦敦。

e.g. She summoned the waiter.

她召唤服务员过来。

3. to arrange an official meeting

召集,召开(会议)

4. to call for or try to obtain sth

吁求;请求;争取

e.g. to summon assistance/help/reinforcements

5. summon sth (up): to make an effort to produce a particular quality in yourself, especially when you finde it difficult

鼓起;振作;使出

(syn.) muster

e.g. She was trying to summon up the courage to leave him.

6. (phr. v.) summon sth (up): to make a feeling, an idea, a memory, etc. come into your mind
