Exempt

(a.)

1. exempt (from sth): if sb/sth is exempt from sth, they are not affected by it, do not have to do it, pay it, etc.

免除(责任、付款等);获豁免的

e.g. The interest on the money is exempt from tax.

这笔钱的利息免税。

e.g. Some students are exempt from certain exams.

有的学生可免除某些考试。

2. -exempt (in compounds, forming adejectives)

构成复合形容词

e.g. tax-exempt donations to charity

给慈善机构的免税捐款

(v.)

exempt sb/sth (from sth) (formal): to gie or get sb's official permission not to do sth or not to pay sth they would normally have to do or pay

免除;豁免

e.g. His bad eyesight exempted him from military service.

他因视力不好而免除兵役。

e.g. In 1983, charities were exempted from paying the tax.

1983年慈善团体均免除付税款。
