Sober

(a.)

1. (not usually before noun) not drunk (=not affected by alcohol)

未醉

e.g. I promised him that I'd stay sober tonight.

我答应过他,今晚我不会喝醉。

e.g. He was as sober as a judge (=completely sober).

他一点没醉。

2. (of people and their behaviour) serious and sensible

(人及其行为)持重的;冷静的

e.g. a sober assessment of the situation

对形势的冷静估计

e.g. He is honest, sober and hard-working.

他诚实、稳重、勤奋。

e.g. On sober reflection (=after some serious thought), I don't think I really need a car after all.

冷静地想了想以后,我觉得我其实并不需要车。

3. (of colours or clothes) plain and not bright

(颜色或服装)素净的;淡雅的

e.g. a sober grey suit

一套素净的灰西装

(v.)

to make sb. behave or think in a more serious and sensible way; to become more serious and sensible

(使)变得持重,变得冷静

e.g. The bad news sobered us for a while.

坏消息使我们冷静了一会人。

e.g. He suddenly sobered.

他突然严肃起来。

(phr. v.)

sober up / sober sb up: to become or to make sb no longer drunk

(使)醒酒

e.g. Stay here with us until you've sobered up.

你就待在我们这儿,等酒醒了再走。

引申:sobering

(a.)

making you feel serious and think carefully

令人警醒的;使人冷静的

e.g. a sobering effect/experience/thought, etc.

令人警醒的效果、经历、思想等

e.g. It is sobering to realize that this is not a new problem.
