Behind Every Dark Cloud Is A Rainbow

As the saying goes: Behind every dark cloud is a rainbow.

And for the residents of storm-battered Bristol, that was certainly the case - albeit just for a few moments - when this spectacular spectrum of colours provided a little light relief from the ongoing rain today.

The sunshine finally managed to break through the thick grey sky, creating this perfect semi-circle rainbow which looks as though it is enveloping the houses of the town of Totterdown.
The myriad colours are formed when beams of light reflect off raindrops, scattering the red, orange, yellow, green, blue indigo and violet hues across the sky.

On the backdrop of the dark clouds, the colours look especially vivid - mainly because the water droplets are fairly large in size - between one and two millimetres.

However, the joy from the rainbow was short lived after forecasters warned there is more rain on the way.

It comes as figures show Britain has been hit by one of the wettest Novembers on record.

This month has already had the fifth highest amount of rainfall – and it's set to climb after figures for the past week are added tomorrow.

There were 35 flood warnings in force from the Environment Agency, with 22 in the north east.

A Met Office spokesman said November 2009 could ultimately be one of the wettest since 1914.

'There's been a lot of rain in parts of the country over the past few days and it's possible it could end up being the third or fourth wettest November on record when the figures are averaged out tomorrow,' he said.
